Midnight Visitor |
Robert Arthur |
Scene 1: Before Entering |
Stage Directions |
In a dim hallway on the sixth floor of a French hotel, Fowler eagerly follows Ausable, who puffs up his chest and throws mysterious glances back. Just as he’s about to continue boasting, he suddenly stumbles on a loose floorboard, almost falling over. He quickly brushes himself off, while Fowler struggles to suppress laughter.
Narration | 旁白
Perhaps Ausable wasn’t the “heroic spy” Fowler had envisioned, but he was certainly a confident showman. With exaggerated gestures and a “mysterious” grin, he seemed determined to mask his clumsiness, but Fowler couldn’t help but wonder: is this man really a spy?
Ausable
(Feigning confidence, brushing himself off) Ah, yes, just part of the “spy life”—constant obstacles.
Fowler
(Hiding a grin) Is that so? Looks, uh… truly dangerous.
Ausable
(Putting a finger to his lips, with mock mystery) Tonight, you’ll see some real… “action.”
Scene 2: Inside the Room |
Stage Directions |
Fowler followed Ausable into the room, and as the light turned on, all the decorations in the room became apparent, including a thin man standing in the middle with an automatic gun aimed at them. The atmosphere seemed to become tense, and Ausable seemed to have finally found an opportunity to show off his abilities. In just a few words, Max bring about his own destruction, but when Fowler realized it, he felt it was nothing more than that.
Narration | 旁白
Fowler was skeptical of Ausable's words and entered the room with the attitude of trying to watch a play. However, he encountered an unexpected guest named Max. Fowler cooperated and witnessed their confrontation, unable to say whether Ausable was really clever or if Max was too naive to deceive. The night outside the window was a bit darker.
Ausable
Cheer up, my young friend. Soon you will see a quite important paper which may well affect the course of history. How dramatic!
Fowler
There is someone here.
Max
Ausable
Max(装吓到), you gave me quite a start. I thought you were in Berlin. What are you doing in my room?
Max
The report about some new missiles will be safer in my hands than in yours.
Ausable
This is not the first time. I'm going to complain about the management .I‘m angry.
Max
Balcony?(惊讶)No, I did not know there was a balcony.
Ausable
(生气地朝Fowler 解释)(指) You see. The balcony, which extends under my window belongs to the next apartment. Somebody get onto it from the empty room next door last month. The management promised to block it off. But they haven't.
Fowler
Max
(看了看Fowler,挥了挥拿枪的那只手,命令他坐下) Sit down,We have to wait for half an hour.
Fowler
(颤抖着摸着凳子企图坐下) O~~O~OK.
Ausable
Thirty-one minutes,The appointment with him was for twelve-thirty. How you learned about the report, Max?
Max
(邪恶笑了笑) I will get it back tonight.(敲门声起) What is that? Who is at the door?
Fowler
Ausable
That will be the police,I thought such an important paper should be kept safe at all time.
Max
Ausable
What will you do now, Max ?If I do not answer the door, they will not hesitate to shoot.
Max
Send them away or I'll shoot you!
Henry
"Mr Ausable! Mr Ausable!"
Max
Henry
Max
Scene 3: After the Window Jump |
Stage Directions |
There’s a sudden knock at the door. Max panics, backing toward the window, brandishing the gun. He glances between the door and the window, curses under his breath, and clumsily climbs out. A faint thud follows his exit—likely his landing. Ausable glances briefly at the window, unconcerned. Just as the door opens, a waiter enters, holding a tray with a single chilled bottle of soda.
Narration | 旁白
As Max made his awkward escape, Fowler’s look of tension melted into exasperation, especially upon seeing the waiter’s tray. It was not a sign of backup or danger—just soda. At that moment, Fowler realized that this was not the dangerous life of espionage he had imagined. It was an absurd, comical performance all along.
Ausable
(Grinning, watching Max disappear, then turning to the waiter) Perfect timing, Waiter. Thank you.
Waiter
(Setting down the tray) Your cola, sir, just as you requested.
Ausable
(Nods approvingly) Excellent.
Stage Directions |
Ausable casually opens the soda and takes a long sip as Fowler looks on, stunned. With a relaxed sigh, he lets out a loud, satisfied burp.
Fowler
(Still bewildered) That’s it? That’s your “action”?
Ausable
(Shrugs casually) Sometimes, the simplest plans are the best.
Stage Directions |
Fowler stares at him for a moment, then starts to laugh. From outside the window, a faint groaning sound can be heard—Max, likely regretting his hasty escape. Unfazed, Ausable takes another leisurely sip of cola.
Waiter
(Politely) Would you like me to bring another bottle, sir?
Ausable
(Shaking his head with a grin) No, one’s enough for tonight.
Fowler
(Laughing) Well, Ausable… tonight certainly is… a night to remember.
